LEMONY ICE JELLY DESSERT [愛玉冰]

Ice Jelly [Aiyu jelly] is a jelly made from the gel from the seeds of a variety of fig found in Taiwan and East Asian countries of the same climates. The jelly is not commonly made or found outside of Taiwan. But it is now easily available at most bakery ingredient stores.  We called it as ò-giô like in Taiwanese.
Serve chilled or with grated ice, it is a very refreshing dessert with just lemon or lime.  Of course, with addition of any canned fruits like peaches, lychees and longans, it is most welcome dessert for lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
1 packet Ice Jelly powder [50 gm]
1500 ml water
1 canned lychee [more if you like]
1-2 lemons - sliced and seeded
200 gm castor sugar
100 ml water

  1. Cook ice jelly according to packet instructions - Mix powder with 1500 ml water in a pot.  Bring to boil till the powder dissolves and boil for a further several minutes to get a more chewy texture.
  2. Remove from heat and leave to cool before chilling in the fridge for a few hours.  You can pour into moulds or tray if you like.
  3. Bring sugar and water to boil until sugar dissolves.  Set aside to cool.
  4. To serve - cut the chilled ice jelly into small pieces with a spoon in a big dessert bowl.  Mix in canned fruits, lemon slices and syrup.  Add boiled cool water until the sweetness preferred.
  5. Scoop into individual serving bowls with some grated ice or ice cubes.  Serve immediately.  You can also scoop dessert into individual containers and chilled in the fridge until serving time [do not add ice cubes if storing it this way].

Hi Kimmy,
When the weather is hot & humid, seeing this bowl of ice cold ice jelly dessert is like seeing water in the Sahara desert .... "shiok ah!"

Hi Karen, yes it is very refreshing and you can have it just with lemon juice, crushed ice and syrup or just chilled it before serving. The sweetness is up to own preference.

Hi Soke Hah, this jelly is tasteless but chewy when cooked to the right consistency. A packet of it makes quite a lot which you can chilled in the fridge. We used to be able to enjoy a bowl at RM 1 in the past but not anymore. The price has gone up and you see more ice than jelly in a bowl.

Hi Aunty Young, must say this is a very refreshing dessert with lemons and you can also adjust the sweetness according to preference. Keeps well and good in the fridge for several days too.

Kimmy, I had a dessert quite similar to this at a wedding recently. It was very refreshing and the texture of the jelly was different from usual. It must be this one.

Hi Phong Hong, I agree the texture of this jelly is different from the usual, more gel like and chewy. It is also tasteless and goes well with many varieties of canned fruits but lime and lemon is a must have condiment.
